Cotswold Cabins are produced to a very high quality and are supplied in natural timber. We would therefore recommend that you treat the timbers either during or after erection, with a recommended timber stain treatment. These are easily found in DIY stores and in a wide variety of colours to suit you, i.e. you may choose a natural wood stain or even yellow and red stripes! Please do remember to allow for the timber stain, both in your financial budget and duration of erection.

Assembly Instructions for a Milled Squared Timber Garden House

The garden house has been manufactured with great care and workmanship in a modern workshop in Estonia. It has been made from quality sprucewood (see picture right) and has a moisture content of 16-18%.

The building material is 'fully natural' and therefore the structure of the house 'lives'! For this reason minor crooking of the boards and small cracks in the timber cannot be ruled out. The timber will also have natural branch patterns, typical of all sprucewoods, as well as bark edges and planing traces on the backs of the roofing and floor boards, these are caused by production methods and do not represent any defects.

The timber used is environmentally friendly, and chemical treatments are only used on the impregnated floor joists. All other timbers are untreated, and so if left to stand for a long time may become grey. To avoid this, or to disguise the grey colour, it is recommended that the timbers are painted, either with a recognised timber preservative, or a timber finish. Both of which are sold in most DIY or garden centres. The timbers can be painted during erection, or once the house is completed. It is best to paint the house in DRY weather. When painting the house it is advisable to include the lower floor boards, roofing boards, doors and windows including the sides and casings.

Protection of the timber from sun and damp, using timber preservatives or finishes, before or after erection of the house, will protect the timber and avoid decay. As will good aeration.

Before putting up the house a good foundation must be laid. Foundations ensure the strength and durability of the house, and only a level and bearing foundation guarantees a faultless and stable assembly. The ideal base would be a level concrete base, although paving slabs on a gravel base would also be suitable.

Please be sure to read and understand the instructions carefully before starting assembly.
